My dad got an Atlas lathe a few years back which made Christmas shopping for him very easy, I just made tools and accessories to fit the lathe. One of those accessories was a micrometer carriage stop which he uses quite often. It clamps to the ways with a couple of socket head cap screws and is adjustable with a graduated thimble to.001'. I'll be blunt.
Might be worth your starting price to someone (and I stress 'might').
Don't think it will be worth your buy it now price.
No 3-jaw chuck
No faceplate (the one you have is a dog driver, not a faceplate)
No steady rest, no follower rest
No taper attachment
No QC toolholder, unless you spend $1750 more than the starting price.
No collets, drawbar or lever collet closer
None of the more 'exotic' accessories, like a toolpost grinder (TPG), milling attachment, milling table
Equipping this lathe will cost hundreds of dollars more.
Take a look at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=180214491559
That one went for $4700, but came with a lot more stuff than yours. In fact, about the only thing it didn't have is the TPG.
We have one for sale here in excellent shape with most of the accessories for $1,500 that has a lot more stuff (including the TPG). I didn't buy it because I already have one.

I have bought and sold a few lathes over the years - mostly Hardinge. My guess is your starting price would be about the 'top end' for this type of lathe. I'm astonished that the other one mentioned brought $4,700! Fundamentally, it is just not a great design, no matter what kind of tooling you put with it. Last fall I purchased a Feeler (HLV-H clone) for $2000 with a DRO, and about a year earlier I bought a TFB for $1,600. I've bought a couple of chuckers for $600 -$700 and a Harrison for $1,400. I sold a fully tooled (multiple chucks, face plate, steady, follower, micrometer, QCTP, drill chucks, live center, etc) Dashin Prince for $2,500. I prevoiously sold a SB9 model A with adequate tooling for $1450.

It does seem to be a rather 'pristine' example of this type of lathe. I'm still at a loss as to why someone would pay $4,700 for one. I can't imagine they are collectible or have some value other than a 'lightweight' metal lathe for limited work. Good luck with your auction.

Could never undertand it either, till I figured out that Atlas appeal is because they were very common and at the time could almost be regarded as 'the' home/small shop lathe. Also seems like everyones dad/grandpa had one so much of the value is nostalgia.
as for how common they were, a huge chunk of home machinist related 'how to' articals show either an atlas or south bend lathe.

That lathe went for a bunch for several reasons:
As Kendall said, there's some 'collector' value to them (and, no I don't really understand it either - and I have one!).
That model was the later model with the thicker ways, so it went for more than some ot the earlier ones do. I suspect that there are fewer of the late model ones around (I see fewer of them for sale).
That one was also the underdrive model, which gives you a pretty good size lathe in a small footprint.
It has almost all of the accessories, some of which can go for downright silly prices. The milling attachment can go for a lot more than a new Palmgren milling attachment. A taper attachment recently went for $310 with 11 bidders and 21 bids.
For an older lathe, parts are still very available throuh e-bay and from the manufacturer (even through Sears!).
The seller (a member of this board) did what was probably one of the best jobs of describing it and all the things that went with it.

Someone came along a used the 'Buy-it-Now' to get it for $2,750. I think 'The Gentleman' used some of the opinions and ideas from the prior sale to 'spruce up' his listing a bit. I don't remember the listing looking the same way when I first viewed it. I think he applied some verbal 'lipstick' and 'mascara' to the verbage to enhance the listing. Hey, smart move. My hat's off to him for getting a good price out of that lathe (a whole lot more than I would EVER pay for any Atlas). I had a guy offer me one a while back for around $350, think I'm going to have to give him a call - there's money to be made here...

When I opened a shop in '79 a 'partner' brought in a brand new one of these things to be along side my 20' Pratt & Whitney B and the 20' X 66' Hendey.
It had to be in good condition - it was new, right? Don't know how much it set him back.
It was a horrible excuse for a lathe.
It is amazing to me that anyone would pay anything at all for one of these. - Banned

Back in the 70's my Dad and I almost bought a new 12' from Sears. I think the price was about $550 or $575 (basic lathe) back then that was like all the money in the world to us. Luckily, before we placed the order a used 12' Sidney came up for sale and we bought it for about the same price. I still have the Sidney. I am glad we never bought the Craftsman, but I guess to some people they are considered to be a good lathe. I'm sure most home shop guys have an certain liking for the Atlas stuff, easy to move, single phase, etc. I've been watching the ones on ebay lately and never dreamed they would bring that kind of money. I have a real nice, very well tooled 12 x 36 that I'm going to put on ebay soon. Be interesting to see what it brings

My last posting indicates someone used the 'Buy-it-Now' option to purchase the lathe for $2,750.
